LISTING FOR SHELTER SERVICE
Dexter came to us as a transfer from Nunavut. Dexter was initially quite reactive around his food when he first came to us (not uncommon for underweight community northern dogs). He is still grumbly when touched while eating, tried to avoid the ‘hand’ before grumbling. We’ve found a lot of northern dogs guard items until they trust their handlers. His resource guarding may reoccur in his receiving placement as resource guarding in shelter environment is less than 50% predictive of reactivity in a home environment. Suggest to avoid touching while eating.
Dexter was also quite ‘loud’ during his medical assessment, needing to be muzzled. He is okay with manipulations once he is comfortable with you. With time and relationship building Dexter has minimal issues being handled, loves being snuggled. Happy to greet new people with his husky smile. Does not love restraint, his bum scratched, or feet squished. Gives lots of warning. He is not crate trained.
We strongly believe in satisfying natural drives in dogs. Dexter has a strong desire to pull on his leash (we often address leash skills and reactivity), and does not respond well to restraint that take his control away such as a Gentle Leader or Canny Collar. He needs an appropriate outlet for his drive and energy which we are not equipped to provide at the shelter. A placement in an active home either with cani-cross/jogging or bikejoring/sledding would be best suited.
He is reactive to dogs (socially driven) and trailers (behind cars) whilst on a leash. Dexter is very dog friendly, overheats quickly so short play sessions are best. He’s come a long way with us and now it’s time for him to find an awesome forever placement!
Dexter is neutered and up to date with vaccinations and has no medical issues.
